Special services

Medical attention

If you are travelling between Canada and the United Kingdom and/or Canada and the United States, please refer to the note at the bottom of the page.

Things you should know

For any special services regarding medical attention, please inform your travel agent at least 7 business days prior to departure. Failure to do so may prevent you from departing on your scheduled flight. We have access to MedLink, an emergency telemedicine service. This service enables crew members to contact an emergency physician at all times during the flight. The physician assesses the medical situation and recommends a plan of care. Defibrillators are also on board all of our aircraft. Our Flight Directors and Assistant Flight Directors are fully trained on the use of this equipment.

Allergies

Air Transat cannot guarantee food free of peanuts or seafood products, or that allergens won't be present in the food or snacks served on board. Some of our meals, including the Chicken Korma and the Vegetable Biryani, contain almonds and green peas. We strongly suggest that passengers suffering from food allergies bring their own food and snacks for the duration of the flight. Talk to your physician about the allergy emergency "Epi-pen" (epinephrine).

Oxygen

For most Air Transat flights (except to and from the United States, see below for details), you can bring your own oxygen travel kit for occasional or constant use during the flight, if the size conforms to our carry-on baggage size regulations (23 x 40 x 51 cm).

To bring your own oxygen, we need to receive a special request through your travel agent at least 7 business days prior to departure. Failure to do so may prevent you from departing on your scheduled flight. You must present, along with your special request, the following information:

  • A medical certificate from a physician including a statement that the passenger can fly without risk to him- or herself and other passengers
  • The certificate should also include your physician's name and telephone number and the oxygen flow required
  • The size of your own oxygen travel kit must conform to our carry-on regulations (see below for travel to/from the United States)
  • Liquid oxygen may not be transported at any time, as it is forbidden for transport by air.
  • Personal Oxygen concentrators may be used on board, provided they are certified to meet government emission levels. Spare lithium or lithium ion batteries may only be carried as carry on baggage under controlled conditions and sizes. Please contact us for details.

Passengers requiring in-flight oxygen service are encouraged to contact our Seat Selection Centre. Our agents will be pleased to arrange appropriate seating. Bulkhead seating is not available for passengers using oxygen, as the bottles must be secured under the seat in front for take-off and landing.

Passengers can also bring their own empty cylinder carefully packed as carry-on if the size conforms to regulations or as checked baggage. See details in our Baggage & Dangerous goods sections.

Oxygen (flights to the U.S.)

If you require in-flight oxygen service and are travelling to and/or from the U.S., please note that the requirements are the same as mentioned above, except  that Air Transat will supply the oxygen kit (charges apply). This is, due to U.S. regulations on board aircraft.  To order oxygen, we must receive a special request through your travel agent as soon as possible but no later than 7 business days prior to departure. Failure to do so may prevent you from departing on your scheduled flight.

Our oxygen supplier is VitalAire. Our MediPak is equipped with "D" cylinder model 390 I. This type of oxygen machine can be used occasionally or on a continuous flow during the flight.

One (1) kit consists of a full cylinder of 2,000 pi
Approximate pressure at 21ºC (70ºF)
Flow (litres per minute)12345
Duration (hours)6:303:152:001:301:15

The fee for oxygen use is 44£ (CA$100) per kit per flight segment (one way), payable at the check-in counter.

Other medical equipment

You can bring your own medical equipment for use during the flight, if the size conforms to our carry-on baggage size regulations (total size/dimensions not to exceed 23 x 40 x 51 cm).

Your medical equipment must absolutely be self-reliant (i.e. battery-powered). Air Transat cannot provide you with power or any other material.

If travelling with your own equipment, it is important to note that you should be self-reliant or travel with an escort, as our crew members are not trained or responsible for any other medical equipment.

Should you need a customized seating or support device for in-flight use, prior approval is required. Please contact us before booking and allow a minimum of 45 to 60 days for approval. Only Transport Canada approved car seats can be accepted automatically (click here for details).

For all other medical equipment, we need to receive a special request through your travel agent at least 7 business days prior to departure for approval. Failure to do so may prevent you from departing on your scheduled flight. You must present, along with your special request, the following specific information:

  • Type and specifications of your medical equipment (including type of battery used)
  • A medical certificate from your physician, including a statement that the passenger can fly without risk to self and other passengers
  • Name and telephone number of your physician
  • Size and dimension of your own medical equipment, which must conform to our carry-on size regulations

Stretchers

Air Transat aircraft are not equipped to transport passengers on stretchers.
